Well, to make things more complicated, The Lego Movie is actually a very fun film. Sure, it has been compared to other animated movies such as Toy Story and other childhood favorites, but The Lego Movie is just so imaginative and entertaining. There is a problem though, and that is that it tries to make a deeper statement about the problems and hopes of this generation. It’s an issue that arises in all kid’s films, but this one tries to do it while poking fun at both movies and the generation itself. The problem is that it takes itself far too seriously and the constant references to “earlier times” and “earlier generations” have the unintended consequence of making it look like a very angry, political film.

Every film has a goal, whether it be entertaining or drawing attention to the issues of our time, but The Lego Movie is particularly ambitious. The story has a certain B-movie vibe as well as a warning against the way that we treat our children that adds a dark, almost sinister undercurrent to the film. It’s a double-edged sword, but while it’s message is extremely well-intentioned and powerful, it can come off as preachy and not very funny at times. Plus, it doesn’t help that the characters are extremely corny, and the movie doesn’t try to avoid it.
