Although there are some blurry edges that were not sharpened to force the converters to work, they are really rare and often created by the jpeg converter in the simplest of workflows.
However, even with the better software recently there is an increase of low quality jpeg files coming from the camera. I believe that the reason for this is that there are not enough people using the RAW converters. And once the raw converters get to beta/RC stage, will be out.

Any of the tools mentioned previously have uses for Photoshop, but I personally find them a bit clunky. If you scale a region of the image, the tool can be used to auto-crop the image and remove unwanted areas of the image.
