There are a great many things to love about Lightroom 5, and I see no reason why anyone should not adopt it immediately. I found myself in no way limited by the interface (though it’s also true that a good photo editor usually doesn’t have UI issues). Indeed, I found myself programming more—on third party filters, tethering, and other ideas that I will delve into with greater enthusiasm. The biggest inconvenience of the new interface is that there is a great deal of information to process. There are images, there is information, and on top of that, as you work with your library, a great many things happen. Every setting is its own dialogue or menu, so it is hard to get a complete picture of what is what. My only real complaint is that it would be nice to take a break from the Details and Arrange windows for the time that I was doing things like crop and edit.
I am not sure how many new users are going to acquire Photoshop because Lightroom RAW to desktop. I find that Lightroom will find the exported files you create in Lightroom and bring it into Photoshop for skin smoothing and such, but I imagine many will just take the raw files to external programs. I agree with you that Adobe is very slow at updating regarding the Mac versions of their software, especially Photoshop. That is likely why I have moved almost entirely to the PC platform. I have been forced to live with less than stellar support from Adobe for so long that I started to think of a move to the PC platform. I love the iPad Pro, though, so I will keep my Photoshop on the Mac platform.
