There’s still an unusual amount of wayfinding in the program, at least compared to separate apps. You can go to the left side and click the brush icon to the left of the brush palette. Then you click the main tool circle, located at the top of the preview area. There you will find more than a dozen different brushes, including the awesome Pen tool, described in the next section. There is a color swatch on the top left, so you can see exactly what the currently active brush will produce.

New brushes include a rough box brush that makes rectangles, a pencil brush with rounded corners that can be used to create simple drawings (not a new feature, but this brush alone is worth getting the update just for that) and a soft sketch pencil brush. You can also create a radial gradient using this brush. Finally, there’s the oxygen airbrush brush that I mentioned in section “10 Things You May Not Know about the New Brush Palette” on page 8. This brush creates mostly simple airbrushing using simple, realistic-looking gradients. The brush works best on full or partial opacity, though a brush hole in the Brush Options (Command/Ctrl-I; the drop-down menu above the Brush palette) allows for the fine-tuning of brush-to-brush transparency.

There are three things you’ll notice when using Photoshop CC:

Adobe has re-invented tools like Select, Fill, and Mask. Now, you can make powerful selections using brushes or simple click-and-drag techniques.
Crop and straighten for easier viewing and editing.
Artboards add new ways to organize your work along the creative process.

The Split Toning tool lets you make beautiful color gradients that are based on any colors you define in the source image. The Shoot mode lets you take a single photo or select up to ten images to create a single photo collage with all the tools you need. It also offers 30 Stills Mode and the Automatic Mode. Stills is a specific apparatus, or artistic medium, using a variety of film techniques, ISO speeds, and mediums (which you can choose from either black and white, color film, or a combination of both, and in the case of video shoot, there are up to 24 adjustable film speeds.) It’s designed for use with SLRs in addition to digital cameras.

If you use Mac OS X, you should know that layers allow you to keep your image and design consistent as you edit it, and you can move, crop, and distort multiple layers simultaneously using guides. If you’re using Mac OS X, you’ve probably already installed it. Its powerful, free DNG storage makes RAW files portable and compatible within a single application for the first time. In addition, Photoshop CC is integrated with other Creative Cloud applications, so you can access your files and access Photoshop through the cloud, so you can begin editing your work the instant it’s available and not wait for your computer to finish presenting it.

Still, there’s far more to Adobe Photoshop than just editing photos. You can create and edit Dynamic Text, add vector layers to your images, style all kinds of objects, and export high-resolution PSD files.
