Adobe Photoshop is one of the most popular image editing software available. It is used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. As such, it should be no surprise to anyone that the use of Lightroom on a Windows platform with a different workflow as David Parfitt presents a fundamental problem. Parfitt’s software makes extensive use of “smart collections” and smart collections are a feature unique to Lightroom, where the user can create a set of key concepts that group similar images together into a single collection. Smart collections are great, but on Windows, the use of Smart Collections and File Formats are not completely compatible.

Adobe did exactly what was expected, and went and updated Lightroom to work with Windows 7. The problem is that, as of July, 2017, the Lightroom 7 update appears to be missing an update to the Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 versions of Lightroom. In my experience, this was not an update that was pulled from the download servers before it was released but it was removed from the download servers after it was released. This means that only Lightroom 7 for Windows 7 is available.

That said, I have been using Lightroom 7.0.4 on Windows 7 Pro x64. In my workflow, I have synced my hard drive files to the Lightroom database. Lightroom 7.0.4 lives happily with the Windows 7 Pro x64 environment. I am not sure why I haven’t had the chance to try it on my Mac, as I’m sure it would run fine. As it stands, from here on, I only do exports and imports from Windows using Lightroom 5.

First, you want to update your 64-bit Adobe Photoshop. Open the application and click on “Updates” to download the latest version. When you have downloaded the latest program, update the program by clicking on “Updates” again. When the program has completed the update, you’ll want to activate the program for the first time. Open the program and then click on “Activate” to download the full version of the program. After you have downloaded the full version, you will want to crack the program. Nice review but after upgrading to LR5.2 RC I think performance is better than with LR4. Working on a project with 1500 D800 NEFs my impression is that the smart previews increase speed while working in the Developer mode – in Lib. mode however everything slows because the JPEG previews are used. So far I am not sure how the Jpegs are used as previews when you have the smart previews (DNGs) available. But have to say that I am happy with 5.2 RC although I will say bye-bye to LR the day they make it part of CC.

The brand new UI is one of the biggest changes with Lightroom 5. In fact, I’d say that one of the most innovative additions to Lightroom 5 is the UI. You have a total of seven tabs that you can access from the top of the program, including presets, cloud, and export. The topmost tab is the one you use most often. Under “Presets” you get a detailed list of all the presets—great for browsing. The second tab is the “Cloud.” That’s where you get to choose from some of Adobe’s preconfigured templates that will give a general look to your images. You can also use Lightroom’s own presets, of course, which are listed under the “Library Settings” tab. This tab is particularly useful for those who shoot in raw format. You can transfer almost all the settings from your camera Raw Converter to Lightroom 5, including custom-made or camera-specific tweaks. The next tab, “Export,” is where you can see exactly what settings and metadata will be exported with each image. If you select a particular option as is the case with the “Create new event” checkbox, you can use its dialog to add preconfigured settings and metadata that will be carried over to the image. A feature like that has long been missing from other image editors. The rest of the tabs are fairly obvious. Do yourself a favor and install the update, even though it may appear to have a bug here or there.
