If you have been a consistent user of Lightroom for some time now, you aren’t likely to see the new features much, and the new features are anything but essential. This version of Photoshop comes with a much improved file size and performance. The switch to the new 10.0 beta features a 10x performance increase on the CPU, and the improvements in file sizes are noticeable. A totally revamped 32-bit performance is present in the new version and the new file sizes are 70% of the last version. The new performance also means that less memory is required for your projects.

The performance improvement wasn’t the only big change with the release. Photoshop also moves from 32-bit to 64-bit which unlocks all the power for those who aren’t constrained by memory spaces. The new version also features an entirely new user interface with a new and carefully placed new tools which should make it feel that much more intuitive. There’s also a new copy/paste function, resolution changing images and a new crop tool.

Older versions of Photoshop will have many common program elements found within PhotoShop and have a few popular tools which can’t be changed in the new version. The removal brush tool features a large brush with fine control over opacity, brush angle and soft edges, whereas its replacement Brush Tool lets you touch up areas of the image.

I was curious about a feature that Nikon add-ons offer. By rotating an image, you can create a mirror image of it, and Photoshop, instead of rotating it, acts with its mirror representation. Sadly, this works with layers only. Creating a negative isn’t as simple as it should be. You can convert an image into a white background (a sort of inverted black and white) using Photoshop, but when you’re ready to apply fade effects, the white background is more prone to diffusing the colors in the image. But the iPhone version really blew me away. It has a tool — the More Effect tool, as seen in the screenshots above — that is especially designed for this purpose, and it looks nearly identical as it did with a physical camera.

At the same time, Lightroom is becoming more powerful and helpful and it’s now easier than ever for anyone with a smartphone to get started editing their photos. As a result, the average user is no longer using Photoshop, and so Lightroom controls a lot more of the photography space.

But it’s a simple market strategy for Adobe to adapt to. Even if you want to learn Photoshop, you’ll have little difficulty in picking up something about it. The Photoshop photo editing basics can be quickly mastered.
