“Michigan’s job market remains strong. Unemployment dropped in December from 4.3 percent to 4.1 percent, the lowest unemployment rate in the nation,” said Kurt J. Weller, Michigan’s secretary of labor and workforce development, in a statement.

I have a string that contains 3 characters and a value that are surrounded by strings.
The string looks like:
1_aa
I need to get the aaa as a result.
EDIT:
So for example, I have a variable $string that could be “1_aa” or “2_cc”, or “1_gg_ee_9” or “2_dd” etc. The string doesn’t have spaces surrounding them. What I need to do is replace aaa, bbb, ccc, ddd with the actual value.
I tried doing it with a regular expression but it didn’t work. Here’s what I have:
s/(\d+_)(\w+)//g

This is a pretty simple pattern to match.
