The fear of potential danger is a driving force underlying normal emotional and social behavior, and is crucial for avoiding negative outcomes, such as injury. Whereas both positive and negative emotions are involved in response to rewards, the pattern of brain activity underlying risk-taking outcomes is largely unknown. As a first step towards this goal, we are beginning to examine neural circuitry that is related to risk-taking and reward. As risk-taking is differentially associated with addiction-related behavior and neuronal activation in the amygdala, we will use a combination of neuroimaging, functional connectivity and connectivity-based graph theoretical analyses to understand how the connectivity between the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex, and the connection between the amygdala and striatum during risk-taking outcomes are represented and recalled in the brain. We will utilize well-validated functional magnetic resonance imaging paradigms to examine neuroimaging patterns associated with risk-taking and reward. We will then use functional connectivity analysis (as well as structural connectivity, graph theoretical, and network meta- analysis) to examine how each of these structures influence and are influenced by other brain regions related to risk-taking.
