I’ve recently upgraded to Lightroom 5.2 (RC). I had a couple of questions about how this new version integrates with the CC suite and I had a few other things to review. So far I’m pretty happy with Lightroom 5.2, but have some issues. I’ll run trough it in the order I came to know of. But first a little disclaimer. This is a review of a new version of Lightroom (5.2) and not the current stable release (5.2). Still, I expect it to be a stable version of Lighroom prior to the final release soon.

Installing Adobe Photoshop and then cracking it is easy and simple. The first step is to download and install the Adobe Photoshop software on your computer. Despite the fact that Lightroom can import and export just about any file format known to man, it is sorely lacking in some of the features of Photoshop. Let’s see what Adobe doesn’t have which its competitors do. You’ll notice some overlap with the best of the best Adobe’s list.

This is by no means an all-encompassing list. It’s limited to what I could find today in direct comparison to Lightroom. I have not seen a Lightroom comparison chart, if it even exists. I can only speak to what I see, and the list is shorted than I had anticipated.

Almost all the toolbox tabs, sorting options, importing/exporting, and exports are here. Concerning duplicates, there’s little in the way of UI-related options. Curiously, the options are mostly absent from RAW conversion, such as the ability to choose what program to use or even how to spell corrections. Bottom line: Lightroom 5 doesn’t help you with these things.

The question of what kind of user Photoshop Elements is for was a recurring theme among my interviews on the subject. Elements pros—those people who mostly use it for its image editing activities—would often say they use it at least a couple of hours a week, some much more often—and even a few multiple per-week. I realize that these are tremendously lofty productivity figures, and they often have to be done in addition to normal types of work. However, they speak to how completely at home the program is in the typical photographer’s workflow. Other people were more like me, and they said they rarely use Elements related to image editing, and then only when they were feeling a little frisky.

What It Does: This tool helps you create logos and wrappers. It allows you to create fonts easily and even include your own graphics. This is helpful if you have strong feelings about what you want your logo or wrapper to look like without having to worry about altering everything by hand.

It is interesting to note that professional graphic designers and photographers use the same software programs to achieve different tasks. Photoshop comes with a host of tools to aid in page design, digital painting, and to alter your images in general.

What It Does: As the name implies, the Stroke tool lets you draw paths on screen. The Pen tool can be used to create vector shapes on screen. Also useful for drawing and editing paths, these tools provide the ability to easily erase shapes, which provides the toolset to create complicated paths to create designs and images.

These tools are often used for many different tasks, from editing a simple paragraph to creating complex website designs. The Tools tab of Photoshop has been expanded, so you can also adjust the size of your document, export your image to PDF, and perform other options at your browser.

After finally installing Photoshop on my new Mac I quickly want to check out how the new Photos app works with the app and how it handles photos I’ve archived in the past. I’m an avid user of the macOS Photos app since it’s a seamless way to handle my photos and videos from one location. Eventually I’m going to upgrade to the latest version, which now supports sharing files via a Mac device. Over the past several months I’ve been experimenting and learning how to use the Photos app as a new curriculum and this step will serve as an introductory tutorial. I’ll also treat the Photos app as a new and external tool to learn how to use Photoshop.

With that as my guide, I upgraded to the latest version of the Photos app, which included the new 64-bit version. The first thing I noticed was the jump to 64-bit as a Photoshop is currently only available to macOS users that have a 64-bit Intel chip. Other changes included the ability to tag files right in the Photos app (before a separate tag editing app has to be used). Clicking on a photo opens an auto-tagging window through the Photos app. The camera also opened automatically when pressing the Space bar to take a picture, and I was able to access Library > Preferences to change a few settings. Later, I’ll talk more about what I feel are some of the improvements made to the Mac OS version of Photoshop.

There will also be a practical re-design, which can be accessed through the search tab or icon options in the top right corner of the interface. And also a handful of additions, including adding the ability to subvert ISIS, connecting certain PSD files and turning a web design into a Photoshop file. You can get more details here.
