Buster Keaton’s classic comedy “The General” premiered more than a century ago and remains a timeless classic to this day. The film follows Andy a struggling dancer, who sets out to earn enough for the funeral of his friend, a soldier who was killed in battle. Along the way he becomes embroiled in a battle between two opposing factions, and his resolve to keep his dead friend’s secret is tested.
Andy’s quest takes him to his mother country’s capital where he plays “The General”, a catch phrase for all ranks of people who seek recognition. However, Andy’s fame and fortune also attract the attention of a wealthy financier who seeks to enrich himself by amassing Andy’s position and his loyal following. Soon, Andy and his mother (who has set her eyes on a diplomatic post for him) are forced to make a choice. Who will win the war of the people and the businessman?
The plot of Travis McGee is the stuff of classic novels and movies. The story is told as a collection of brief case histories, written by a private eye named Travis McGee (John Hillerman) in a series of syndicated newspaper columns. A veteran of Florida’s Gulf Coast and a resident of Pruit and Tarpon Springs, Travis solves mysteries and protects the public from dangerous problems.
Travis’ work entails long hours battling the major villains in Florida: the drug dealers, the bikers, the hijackers, the thieves that go to great lengths to get their hands on the swag that Travis recovers from them. First aid, real estate, and a local newspaper are also important aspects of his life.
Travies McGee stories have been translated into many different languages and can be read in many different countries and cultures around the globe. Between 1995 and 2000, four television series aired of this series. The first was a pilot film which starred John Hillerman as Travis McGee. Then there were two novels, two films plus several scripts and an international television series. Finally, there was a sequel and movie of the first film.
