The canvas is something to use for creating a project in the initial stages before you start manipulating the image. Filling in the color and moving the image around is all you need to do for a large number of projects. If you are not ready for using the photo manipulation tools yet, or if you need to see a final result, you can always work on a blank canvas.
However, the advantage of the actual photo editing and viewing tools is that they don’t restrict you to a blank canvas. You can apply a variety of brushes or textures to the photo in specific ways and place on the canvas using your drawing tools.
It’s an incredible tool, I use it to edit every single photo I take. Photoshop is the simplest way to edit photos. All the power of a high-end tool in any other form is available in Photoshop.
