Good review. I’ve been a long time aficionado of Lightroom on my Windows machines, and in the 5.2 release they finally got the usability right. I was always expecting the latest version of Lightroom to work reasonably smoothly and for the user interface to do what it said it did. Very disappoint when I actually saw the 5.2 beta. Once I purchased my first shot of X-Trans RAW I was disappointed to see that the interface was not optimized for the format, as it had been in earlier Lightroom incarnations. Now, however, it’s finally aesthetically pleasing. I think it’s a good bet that Fujifilm will come to their senses and start assisting Adobe to enhance this decidedly underrated RAW file format.
Ah, the old film-to-digital workflow. Once you get used to it – and there’s only a handful of apps that can step into the shoes of film, there’s not much else there. In this respect, I’ve had to limit myself to very basic (and analog-specific) adjustments.

For me, the fact that perhaps most of the applications I want to use do so in such an awkward way is why I avoid them. The more natural workflow, implemented in Lightroom, allows for the slightest amount of manipulation, or for small changes to be saved and applied all at once. I know there are a lot of people who are not so happy with the Nik app on the iPad and that’s fine. But I don’t use the iPad to edit photos, I just edit photos with it, as I did use PhotoShop for video in the past. Even on the PC, I should be able to do all I like with the software I use, and if you don’t have the software that you use you may as well not be using it.
