Does git revert for one file destroy all previous commits?

If I use revert to restore a file in git, will it revert all previous commits?
I know that normal reverting does that but the file being reverted might be changed by other commits before and I want to know if this is also true for revert.

Normal revert operation does not destroy anything. Revert has an option–preserve-merge to keep your merge commits, which is only useful if you want to do it frequently. To illustrate:
$ git revert master HEAD
Checking out files: 100% (256/256), done.
$ cat hello
> world
$ git add hello
$ git commit -m “hello world”
[master (root-commit) 4b04c5c] hello world
1 file changed, 1 insertion(+), 1 deletion(-)

$ git revert master HEAD –preserve-merge
Checking out files: 100% (256/256), done.

$ git log –pretty=oneline
