Apurvai By Pu La Deshpande Book

He was the writer of eight award-winning books Achha Kanya Jot and Majha Marathi Bhasha and Bal Gandharva (Jai Santoshi Maa), for which he received the 2004 Maharashtra State Award for Best Book on Cinema. PuLa was also awarded the Maharashtra state government’s prestigious Vyas Ratna award. The award named him as a living legend of Marathi literature and culture. He received the Rashtrabhava award from the government of Karnataka and the Nagpur Sahitya Akademi award. He was twice honored by the Padma Shri and twice by the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. He also received several other awards from the Government of India, including the Maharashtra State Film Award, the Karnataka State Film Award, the Karnataka State Lalitha-Sahitya Academy Award, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. During this time period, PuLa crossed over the boundaries of artistry and addiction, destroying and creating the lives of people in the process.

At the age of 14, PuLa quit school after class 8th and joined a new musical group. He started practicing singing using this new talent, and by the age of 15, he was picked up for a play by the popular Marathi theatre group, Kamasutra. He played the role of Kali, a female performer of the mythological Hindu goddess, in the play Sadashivrao Phaltan. This performance won him a coveted place at the National School of Drama. He studied and performed for three years at the NSD. After completing his studies there, PuLa joined the Bengal Krishna Gana Sangha, in which he gained national recognition.

On the stage, PuLa played the role of Shishupala the King in the play Gupt: Chanti Shakti Chali, which received acclaim for its performance and the memorable dialogues spoken by his then friend, the then Maharashtra Minister of Culture, Shripad Amrit Shah. During the performance, PuLa defeated many veterans in the field and became the superstar of Marathi theatre. He played more than 20 roles over the next few years.

Following his 1960s successes as a popular stage actor and widespread film acting, Pu La became known to all Marathi audiences as ‘Pu La ma’ (Pu La, the great). In the 1960s, he was, with Ravi Shankar, the lead singer for the band ‘Harmonium’ he founded in 1960. He directed Shankar’s compositions as harmonium player. They released their first album, ‘Namaste Boys’, in Tokyo in February 1961. The album included the first two songs of Bharat Bhavanjaana by Varank — ‘Bhawanibhavan’ and ‘Vasuneli suvayali.'[11]
