Admittedly, I had wanted to do it since the first Battle Brawlers ended. I had saved a load of data, and I had no qualms about replaying the game to achieve this goal. For the record, I’m only about halfway in, but you can tell how I feel about the game from the conclusion. I spent almost 8 hours last night on it, and I’m in the midst of playing it again now. While I was writing this, my phone dinged. I decided to go for it, and for the first time since I started writing this, it’s finished. This is the first time I’ve had a load of data, and I’ve finished the game. I’m glad that I didn’t use an emulator, because that can be a pain in the ass.
At the end of each team’s character creation screen, there’s a message that says
“Hello!
You are a member of Pearl Harbor, and you are part of
an elite fighting force.
Keep your eyes open for enemy fighters, and report
what you see to headquarters!”
To the left of that, there is an “Enter” button that says “Go To Pearl Harbor HQ” and a “Back To Your Fleet” button that says “Return To Your Fleet”. It’s pretty cute, and you can’t do anything in battle without it. It may not seem like much, but it’s important. It’s meant to be a dialogue before entering battle, because you don’t want the game to start before you even have a mission. I say that there’s no tutorial, and that’s true, but there is a bit of dialogue about what to do if you encounter an enemy squadron and you can’t contact headquarters, and the mission briefing before each mission. This was pretty much perfect for what I was going for.
The missions follow a similar pattern. Your starting mission is a sequence of 4 battles where you fight against enemy carrier forces, and either destroy or escape from them. All the units that you fight are from the same squadron. After that, your next 3 missions are in the South Pacific. Each time you are assigned a squadron, there is another load screen. This time, you have to make sure to rescue your leader, who is on the other side of the map. After that, there is a dialogue that is followed by a battle sequence.
Each battle is a free-for-all. There are no team battles, and there are no crewed ships. You are merely competing with the other units to destroy the enemy carrier squadron. You are given control of your squad, and your job is to destroy as many enemy ships as you can before they destroy you. Each side has 18 ships that can be deployed.
