Biology Book For Class 9 Sindh Board

The vast diversity of complex life on Earth, from the simplest unicellular organisms to humans, has been produced by the evolutionary process. Although evolution cannot reliably be observed in nature because it occurs over very long time scales, it is often inferred from the fossil record, where the remains of ancient organisms are preserved. The fossil record shows us that over time, life changes and evolves, just as living things do today. The fossil record also shows that evolution began in the distant past, but stopped for long periods of time. For example, until 3500 BC, the study of carbon-based animal and plant fossils did not exist. Fossil animals had not been used to study evolutionary relationships, although they were known to be preserved in rock. In the last 200 years, naturalists have discovered that fossils of early life are surprisingly similar in organisms from all over the world, despite the differences in geography, climate, and diet. This international pattern of similarity indicates that the first animals evolved soon after life began on Earth, and later diversified in response to changing conditions.

Molecular biology is the field that deals with molecular interactions—the chemistry of how DNA, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and lipids (fats in muscles) interact with each other and how this relates to information processing in the body. Molecular biology also studies how these interactions are modified by environmental factors such as nutritional changes, radiation, temperature, toxins, and disease. The total number of DNA nucleotides in the human genome is estimated at three billion (3 × 109). The average DNA molecule contains about 30,000 nucleotides, and it is estimated that there are around 500,000 genes, ranging between 20,000 and 25,000 of which are some form of protein. A gene is a biological unit that is a template from which an organism’s specific molecules are made. Each gene is a unit of genetic information that contains the code for RNA and proteins. It is now clear that every gene codes for only one protein, and that the protein can act just like a molecule of a chemical similar to the gene. It is also clear that these genes are the basic elements of the organism’s structure. However, the gene is not merely a chemical unit, but also a structural unit. The linear sequence of nucleotides of the gene is organized into genes in specific regions of the chromosome.
