Some members of King Crimson had tried to persuade the band to reform in 1982; but only after a meeting with Belew did Fripp and Bruford return to King Crimson to play two concerts in London and in Cologne in the summer of 1982, at which they played many of their best songs.[105]
When I asked Richard Brunelle if he thought Accidents was as “strident” as his band’s 1980 third release, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, he noted the album would be a tougher sell if he were to ask someone to own it. Moving away from the 1980 sound of the material, he simply stated, “that’s the way it is. That’s my creation… it speaks to me when I hear it, not just when I play it.”[76]
Most famous for its use in the song “Core”, Accidents made a deep impression on the technical musician, rock guitarist and producer, Joe Perry. Perry has played on and produced dozens of records at a level of proficiency, and more so than many major producers, understands and holds an ear for what he considers to be pure rock, which would include (on Accidents), in addition to “Core”, the Carpenters’ massive hit “Top of the World”; the light, swirling and immensely memorable “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot” from Rush; and Davis’s first solo album, The Man With the Horn, from which it was clear he was beginning a change in direction — to a less virtuosic, more rocking sound.
The sometimes erratic intensity of the sound of Garnet Crowell and Danielson was only one of the qualities shared by members of the post-punk band Pylon and the rock band King Crimson. In the same year as King Crimson’s Relayer, Pylon released, with a similar loud ferocity, their own postpunk-influenced “set of eight”, their first full-length album, Punk-Ponk. Pylon, as well as King Crimson, was created and ran by guitarists Mick Mars and Robert Fripp.[106]
