The hand cannon is another fighting style weapon, in that it combines striking power and weapons of throwing with a dagger-and-shoe-horn-type implement. A good example is the Light Bombard, a 15th Century cannon that was ballistically equivalent to a musket, and could shoot two iron balls or a metal-tipped arrow over long distances making them a useful close-quarters weapon. One interesting design feature is that most hand-cannon designs had a straight tail for launching the missile from the bore that attaches in the traditional way to the stock of the weapon.
The two most common swords used in actual battle in Western Europe in the 17th Century were the rapier and the cutlass. The Abreu Rapier was used by infantry and cavalry, and was extremely similar to a modern-day katana, being relatively small and light, and also having the unforgiving one-handed grip that makes the stab incision down the center of the enemy’s rib cage or belly more difficult to block.
Another common weapon used in this period was the problematical falchion, a large, distinctive, double-bladed slashing sword. It had many drawbacks, being too heavy and too wide to use against the heavy armour of the day, and in recognizably u-shaped blade it was difficult to strike with certainty, especially if the enemy was wielding a long pole or halberd-type weapon. In addition, it ran the risk of cutting the top of the enemy’s head if he was already being injured by a spear or hack.
While we may have heard of the word “kilt” and attributed it to a type of Scottish undergarment, the term “skirt” actually predates the kilt. The “skirt” was a loose, flowing Outer garment added or retained by men and women of the aristocracy and the gentry throughout Europe. In most cases the “skirt” was worn under a long or short coat or a jacket, in combination with a loose, flowing undergarment.
