The series follows three cousins — Luz, played by R&B star Sofia Carson, and twins Lily and Matt, played by 20-year-old Judith Hoag and 21-year-old Joseph Cross — whose complicated relationship is a sibling’s dream. The women take the lead in a series of unexpected tale — er, telenovelas. As each of the quartet is confronted with an unfamiliar but challenging topic, they must decide whom among them can lead the other to a self-defined happy ending. Matt drops everything to help her younger cousin — and winds up falling for her.
Following the disappearance of her father, a family drama centered on the remaining members of the original Rodriguez clan is not what teen lawyers Nahomi (Bonnie Somerville) and Arianny (Noel Wells) expected when they move from her parents’ home in Malaysia to Los Angeles. There, all three of the siblings end up in the same law firm, and Nahomi’s path to success lies in earnest (though it crosses with Arianny’s road to self-realization). The country as backdrop offers the potential for great drama and great action. Nahomi makes a case for being the leader of group, though her sister sometimes challenges that notion.
The show has a wiling-to-learn heroine, in this case the feisty and independent Elena (Lauren Vélez), a support detail that many telenovelas lack. She and her lover Cesar (Julian Gil y Sangre) are not typical characters, since they are in love, but not tied to each other. Her boyfriend is a baby-faced giant who lacks the personality to carry a show, but Vélez makes her presence known. Cesar is more full of surprises.
Punto de Fuga manages what few Colombian telenovelas achieve: a faithful translation with the same characterizations, same storyline, and same “history of love” arc as Spanish-language counterparts. Not everything works out in the best possible way, but it works.
