The US release of Deep Purple on Tetragrammaton Records was mainly ignored by the music press, whereas the UK release of the same album was very well received, bringing it back into the upper reaches of the UK charts, where it peaked at No. 84 and remained for several weeks before slipping back into the UK album charts. Deep Purple eventually jumped another three places and peaked at No. 66 on the US charts in early September, due to the band’s successful but reducedly supported second US tour.[40]

Deep Purple determined right from the start to take a different musical approach and to reject the heavy blues and hard rock influences of the band’s previous release, Ha!-Ha!-Ha! Deep Purple’s heavy sound was just what their American label’s finances could not support and the album met with a mixed reception from much of the British public. A lot of time was spent on lead track “Smoke on the Water”[42] at sessions that mostly took place at Island Studios, in London. Their new line-up, referred to as Mark II by the band[3] consisted of singer Rod Evans, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover and drummer Ian Gillan.[28] Producer David Morse along with engineer John Massari mixed the album’s 11 tracks.[26][43]

Tetragrammaton Records was in debt for over one year, which Steve Morse and his school friend Eddie Offord, both working in the label’s finance department, were unable to provide a timely solution. Early 1970s were hard times for US record companies.[10][44] By the beginning of 1970, Deep Purple’s royalties were running low, the band’s UK record deal was expiring and interest from other American record companies dried up in the face of Deep Purple’s continued heavy promotion on the back of the success of their second album.[10] A cash injection and a new contract were still required, but new management and new contracts with Harvest Records in the UK, Swan Song Records in the US, Warner Music Group in the US and United Artists in Europe were required for that. The band’s long-time manager Bill Curbishley was made redundant.
