By using the same color for different areas of the same image, you can create a solid-looking, blended image that has layers of color, which you can manipulate in future steps. You can also use the Gradient tool and the Gradient Fill tool to create shading and color gradients in the image. (This tool works best when you choose the “Gradient” option to create the gradient, as opposed to manually entering a solid color.)

The Fill tool, formerly the Paint Bucket tool, fills any solid area with the color of your choice. It’s great for solid backgrounds or coloring large areas. It can also be used to apply patterns to your images.

The Rectangular Selection tool lets you easily select an area of an image without using intelligent selection tools. To select an area of an image, just click on the smaller square box that follows the corner of an area.

This tool, found at the bottom menubar, is essential when using the Gradient tool or Gradient Fill tool. I often use it in place of the Gradient tool and leave the tool I’m attempting to gradate as the active tool in the menubar.

The Elliptical Selection tool allows you to easily select a circular or elliptical shape within a selection area. This is a great tool if you’re attempting to confine a shape to a specific area of the image

For our use case, we needed to sketch in some new features that would let our users edit existing photos in the browser. We built a complex workflow system that included importing, merging, annotating, export and exporting was to actually come together.
