Raw files are more complicated than JPEGs. A RAW file has many more variables than a JPEG—including the level and color correction applied to the image. If you make adjustments to an image’s white balance, using the white balance sliders now takes into account the raw information in the raw file. This is called “calibration.”

I wish Adobe had incorporated the much-anticipated Planar illumination algorithm, which isn’t available in the basic version. While it has been used in some part in the new Photoshop since the previous version, it has been proven as more of a novelty than a benefit. The function allows you to specify the plane (or plane) that the light illuminating the subject and the components of the scene should be created on. This enables you to then use lighting effects that are more complex in nature and to better utilize skin tones, bokeh (blurring that is more prominent on the edges of an object, creating the illusion of depth), and backlit elements. The Planar algorithm also allows you to decompose an image into different planes. This is useful when you want to make a photo with people’s facial expressions as well as their hair.
