Building on the improvements made in version 4, I think Lightroom 5 is the best version of Photoshop yet. I am quite impressed with the amount of work that has gone into the product. It does feel like a one-man show, though. Ryan Stewart has done a great job with the programs and framework, but he could always say that when you have 10-20 people contributing feedback and checking grammatical errors.
It’s also interesting to note that Lightroom has been improved to learn from browsing habits of users in order to speed up the Import Job. I have also noticed that changes made today took effect, which means that Lightroom no longer gives you a Warning dialog when importing one of the Photos.001 files. It just works.
The only thing that still needs to be ironed out are a little more vivid and accurate colours, dropping highlight quality for example, a bit more intuitive use of the Organizer, and a way for the user to quickly access and sort their images the way Photoshop CS6 does. Still, I think that’s a pretty good start.
It’s been a roller coaster of an upgrade journey. Even though I’m quite happy with Lightroom 5’s quality, the last thing I need is for my computer to crash, which it did on me twice with this trial version of the App. However, I am still satisfied with the Application’s performance, with it being snappy, responsive, and working as advertised. I do feel that there were some things missing, as described above, but I was previously expecting that from the early adopter phase. Unfortunately, bad things can happen, and they mostly do to people who care. I suggest that most people simply do not need to upgrade from Lightroom 4.3 to Lightroom 5 – there’s enough improvement to keep them happy, and what’s missing is the mere experience and tools that Lightroom 5 was supposed to bring.
