We present a novel approach to display functional molecules at the air-water interface, namely, by the formation of ionic liquid (IL)-modified reverse micelles. The modification of reverse micelles with an IL such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIM PF6 ) can lead to reversible controllable regeneration of the hydrophobic core of the reverse micelle in aqueous solution, thus providing a framework for the regeneration and display of hydrophobic compounds, including the biomolecules, and the identification of ion channels by the use of ion-selective electrodes. This class of materials would be useful for the biosensing and detection of ions and biomolecules.Structure-activity relationship studies of calixarenes as the potent and selective cytotoxic agents.
Calix[n]arenes are macrocycles consisting of n-cyclohexyl and phenolic rings that have been proposed as nucleic acid binding agents. As part of a continuing search for novel cytotoxic drugs, the interaction of a series of calix[n]arenes (n = 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12) with calf thymus DNA was studied using UV absorbance spectroscopy, viscosity measurements, and molecular modeling techniques. The affinity values of the calixarenes to CT-DNA were ranged from 1.30 to 7.67 at a calix[10]arene concentration of 0.34 mM. This study also suggested that calix[n]arenes may have the potential as DNA-intercalating agents and that they may act as potential inhibitors of DNA-topoisomerase. In addition, potent and selective cytotoxic calix[n]arenes were synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, 13C NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and mass spectrometry. The cytotoxicity studies of the calixarenes were done against the cancer cell lines Hep G2 (hepatoma)
