In our third year of learning about yoga, we’re ready to move beyond the occasional meditation and start practicing in earnest. For some, that means doing yoga every day. For others, it means practicing once in a while.

How do you structure your yoga practice? What type of instructor should you choose? We’ll cover these questions and more in this week’s Ask the Guru installment.

Question: I’ve been taking yoga classes for a while, and as I have developed a better understanding of the benefits of physical exercise and the mind-body connection, I’ve started incorporating yoga into my lifestyle. I have started really enjoying practicing yoga as part of my life, but I don’t feel like I’m getting the most out of it. Do you have any advice on how I can improve my practice and cultivate a stronger, healthier yoga practice? —Rachel

Answer: No two people take yoga in the same way. Let’s break this down a bit.

Is your teacher capable of teaching the postures well? A teacher should be able to demonstrate the poses with ease, showing you the proper alignment and how to move in a safe manner, which means your teacher should be able to back up what she’s teaching.

Does your teacher focus on helping you strengthen your core and building muscular strength, or does she focus on improving flexibility and lengthening your limbs?

Most teachers should try to improve your alignment in every posture.

Does your teacher put an emphasis on the number of repetitions you’re doing? In other words, is she just sticking to you, working you to exhaustion, or is she encouraging you to keep going?

Is your teacher respectful and patient when you make mistakes?

My focus is on helping you understand your body better. If you’re doing a vigorous posture, you may need to remind yourself about your current physical condition. Is it natural for you to have poor core strength or are you prone to back pain? These are all questions you can ask yourself and your instructor to gain a better understanding of what will work for you.
