Horsecore 2008 62

The fundamental dynamic of riding can be illustrated by a boy throwing himself from a roof: if he would use the necessary skill to prevent injury to his body and internal organs, and if his horse would want to follow his lead, he would ride to the ground unharmed. Only, the horse will not jump if the rider is not clear about where he wants to go. Thus, it is all the more important for the rider to know exactly how his horse would like to move, especially when the horse is trained for a particular purpose.

In contrast, French riders do not know their horses’ preferences (although it is advisable to try!). Most importantly, specific training programmes also do not take the horse’s individual nature into consideration. They do not teach the ultimate goal of the ride, the explanation or analysis of the signals, the music, nor do they teach tricks. Instead of working with the horse for specific purposes, the horse is trained in regimented systemic fashion (Schütz, Benham, & Kuster, 2008).

Most idling horses come from a military family. They were not trained in the way we have come to know in the last 30 years. It is not for naught that many of today’s training methods are based on the theories of Pavlov, Koch, Ida, and Freud. As these theories received their initial impetus from horse trainers and exhibitors, it will be possible for the horse to find itself in perfect harmony with its trainers, its environment, the rider, and the public at large. A rider and a horse who understand each other are able to develop trust – not necessarily in each other, but in a mutual understanding of each other’s needs in the riding situation. They understand themselves in each other. Such a trustful understanding allows for an unusually high feeling of closeness in a relationship.

The horse-as-‘object’ of psychoanalytic study and theory first gained prominence with Freud’s theory of the sexual drives. Specifically, Freud believed that the primary or literal sexual object for the drives is the human breast. The ‘transference’from this object to the mammogram thus provided the basis for psychoanalysis.
