The names of the invertebrate taxa (species, genus, family, order, class, or phylum are given on line 1. The taxon’s median depth is given on line 2. A number of studies have demonstrated an association between inshore biodiversity and depth (e.g., ref. 16).[1, 2, 3] As a result, data on the depths at which taxa have been recorded were also recorded for this dataset (median depth from three replicates). Where only one study contained depth data for an individual taxon, this was checked against other relevant studies to ensure that the depth was correct. Taxon line 3 lists any reproductive stage, either recorded or, for reproductive taxa, inferred. If reproductive data were recorded, the month or phase of the year is indicated by a number between 1 and 12 plus the period of the year, e.g., winter, summer. Line 4 indicates what type of trawl (e.g., 1 indicates: dredge, trawl or multispecies trawl; 2 indicates: trawl with fixed array; 3 indicates dusted or multidusted trawl; 4 indicates: trawl with rotating drum). Line 5 indicates whether the taxon can be classified as (i) carnivorous, (ii) deposit-feeding, (iii) filter-feeding, (iv) omnivorous, (v) parasitic.
When supplementary information was available about the expression of a particular trait, this is specified in line 6. For example, where data about the depth at which an echinoid or crinoid reaches sexual maturity is available, this is recorded on line 6 (e.g., 7.1.2). Additional details on the biological taxon’s ecology are included in line 7.
The number of the trait bin is recorded on line 8. This information provides numerical context for the expression of each of the ten biological traits. Each trait is further sub-divided into nine categories (e.g. reproduction < 2000 µm, reproduction < 1 m, reproduction < 1 mm), on the basis of level of aggregation for a given trait.
