Einaudi began his career as a pianist; however, his first professional all-digital release, Elidor (1997), debuted contemporary sounds, including arpeggios and the use of synthesizers.[7][8] This is one of the first pieces of music to use the term ‘Ambient Music’ in its title [1] and later provided the foundation for his best-known work, Nocturne (2003), which has sold over 3.6 million copies and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album.[9] In 1999, he presented his first professional concert with the Ensemble Modern.[10]
Einaudi’s wide range of classical compositions has been performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and he has had a long relationship with the New York Philharmonic.[10] Since 1990, he has participated in over 20 commercial recordings.[9] In a 2013 editorial for Gramophone magazine, Andrew Clements described Einaudi as the most important living composer since John Cage.[11] At his most recent awards ceremony for a Grammy Award, Einaudi was presented with the first Steinway Artist Lifetime Achievement Award.[9] In January 2017, Einaudi became the first classical recording artist to release a single on Spotify (Einaudi’s debut, Elidor, came out exclusively on the streaming service).[12]
Einaudi played solo piano as part of the Carnegie Hall MusicNOW free concert series on 9 April 2010.[13] Two months later, he released a CD of his own music, The Dark Knight (2010).[7][10] His second album, Shadowplay, also performed solo piano, was released in April 2011.[7] It consisted of two contrasting pieces, one called “Auric” and received music from more than 100 artists around the world.[7][10] In 2013, Einaudi released an album, In a Time Lapse, whose title track had appeared on Quotidian (2004),[10] an album of conceptual performance music composed and performed by Einaudi, before being redone by a variety of musicians. This work conveyed the complexity of his approach to music composition.
Einaudi has received numerous awards, including the. He was awarded the Premio Italia for composition in 2000, the only classical composer to have received the award in the past 50 years. He was awarded the Silver Bauta in 1995, and went on to win the Golden Bauta in 2004.
