You don’t need to grasp every detail to use CMake. Although we’ll touch some ground in what CMake calls out of the box, the chapter on project configuration clarifies the basics comprehensively. The same holds for the make command. It’s good that CMake works with either, because the features provided by the program that we’ll explore are much more powerful than just making targets.
For most projects, there’s no need to understand the myriad of features and options on the command line. CMake defines a set of common commands, many of which map to well-known Unix tools, that automates a lot of the tedious manual work. Once you’ve outlined your project, CMake works automatically with default options out of the box, so you can concentrate on the really hard stuff: building your project from the idea all the way to the finished final results.
We’ll start by creating a simple CMake-enabled project. In theory it’s not much. A CMake-enabled project is just a single directory, called myproject, plus a single file called CMakeLists.txt. In practice, CMake allows you to add directories and files as needed, which will make the real scenario much more complicated.
The CMakeLists file will contain the basic configuration. The file is line-based with a list of the files and directories you want to create, along with where they live on your system, and how to build them. Here’s the minimal CMakeLists.txt file for a Linux-based system:
