After a 1963 purge of left-wing opposition, Djilas had been appointed head of the Yugoslav Journalists Union and later editor of the main political newspaper, Borba. During the Soviet years, he had worked as correspondent in Moscow and was fully devoted to Tito’s anticommunist duties. Yet he had become a powerful bureaucrat, and he often felt himself to be a prisoner in a country where the organs of state had a stranglehold on all journalists and writers. He always resented the ways in which the Communist Party leaned on writers for its own purposes.
The new hardline approach tempted Djilas to challenge the system. While he aspired to be a figurehead, his popularity grew, and in the summer of 1984, the conflict with NATO was a resounding success. Some countries, like Finland, were prepared to boycott Yugoslav products, but the wealthy brothers of the current Yugoslav president Janko Vucic cordially invited Djilas to Zagreb. He accepted with alacrity, and his friendship with Janko was soon to lead to his downfall.
