In recent years there has been an increasing demand for environmentally sound methods for treating wastewaters. For instance, in recent years there has been a growing concern about the environmental problems associated with the dumping of raw or treated wastewaters. Further, there have been increasing demands for methods which would allow for the economical treatment of municipal wastewaters and industrial wastewaters. While many new technologies and techniques have been investigated for the treatment of wastewaters, no single system or technique has been found to be completely effective and economical for all of the various wastewaters found in industry and in municipal applications.
The treatment of wastewaters is generally achieved by an initial treatment to reduce the BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) and COD (chemical oxygen demand) to a low value. In general, the initial treatment may involve one or more unit operations such as precipitation, flocculation, aerobic biological treatment, or the like. As practiced, these unit operations are relatively independent of each other. However, additional separation or purification of the final water or effluent may be required if the final water or effluent is to be classified as being clean enough for safe discharge into the environment. One such unit operation which has been found to be effective in a variety of wastewaters is anaerobic liquid-solid separation.
Anaerobic fluid-sludge treatment systems are known in the art. For instance, Pappan et al., U.S. Pat. No. 4,116,844, teaches a process for the control of nitrogen in wastewaters comprising: mixing water with a nitrogen-rich wastewater; mixing an anaerobic sludge with the mixture
