“Our goal with the release of these features is to get Photoshop up into the way that people work today,” Photoshop product manager Jonathan Chan says. “We feel that this fine-tuning of the editing experience will help us move more people to using Photoshop as an image creation and editing tool.”
Going further, the order of filters has been changed, so that the Lens Filter, Gradient Map, and Vignette dialogs are at the top of the panel. Also, the Expressions panel and Layer Mask dialogs now have a drop-down menu that includes each filter’s settings.
Finally, there’s a new redesigned brush presets area in the Brush Picker. The new brushes are smaller and rounder. It’s a nice touch. “[We feel] that human behavior follows something like a circle or sphere,” Chan noted. “So we kept the same visual of the sphere.”
Among the edits that developers made were a few logical ones, such as including backgrounds in layer mask actions; a spot healing tool that works on the Spot Removal and the Gradient tool; a new method of keyframing a curve in the Brush tool; a few brushes optimized for quick retouching; and the ability to put a Photoshop Adjustment Layer into a Smart Object.
If you’d like to try the new feature, now is the time. There’s no release date yet, but the new Photoshop should land on the desktop in coming months. If you live in the US, you’re among the first to get an update. Elsewhere, check your Adobe Account page and you should get an email. Soon.
