Kharatyan’s Passport Was Found

Kharatyan is a controversial Russian tech guru who has been called the “father of Russia’s crypto nation.” In June 2016, the Moldovan NGO Center for Social Development and Human Rights recommended that Kharatyan’s citizenship be terminated based on a finding that his actions relating to cryptocurrencies had rendered him ineligible for citizenship.

In July, Cyprus News 24 reported that Kharatyan had been participating in an economic conference held at the Fortuna Hotel in Nicosia.

Reports subsequently emerged that Kharatyan was in the city with a Russian passport in his name. On Monday, a source told the Cyprus News 24 that authorities on the island had found that the Russian citizen’s passport was in Kharatyan’s possession. They said that an inspection was carried out on the suspect, and he was then taken into custody.

Karatyan is being held in a detention center on the island for 29 hours before his release will be discussed.

Cyprus’ Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs wrote on Twitter that the arrest was a direct result of Russia’s decision to name him “Person of Public Interest.”

“Such a drastic step has not been taken before in the recent years,” he wrote. “As well as the impeccable and legal framework of the law enforcement agencies in Cyprus in combating crime and terrorism, this decision is an outcome of Cyprus’ close cooperation with Russia.”

The founder of Russian crypto news outlet BTCManager spoke to Newsnet.am via Facebook Messenger and explained that he owns two passports, one in his true identity and one in his alias.
