A study in the current edition of the medical journal The Lancet identifies Web searches as a potential source of medical information, but cautions against indiscriminate use and says the information shown can be misleading.
“We searched to identify the first 30 hits of each topic when entering the whole of the medical literature, but because of the vastness of the data, we expected this to be biased, as top hits often have the strongest evidence. This did happen for some of the topics as expected. After the top 30 hits, the evidence for medical information was very weak, despite many top hits having the term somewhere in the title or abstract. This is dangerous as people are easily deceived by fake information, which they can then take as evidence for their own beliefs,” said study author, Dr. Francis King, director of population health at University College London.
The study compared Google’s search results for searches of the phrases ‘cancer’ and ‘asthma’ to the first 30 entries returned for the topic name in the Lancet publication. The results were analyzed for a range of metrics, including specific information versus links, size of Web site, presence of disclaimers, and “direction of causation,” which can include terms like causes and causes.
King said the dearth of accurate medical information is less a problem with Google than with individual Web sites or medical journals. He also noted the biological sciences are lagging in developing ways to process and display the wealth of data now available online, as biology and biology-related fields like genomics, population genetics, and computational biology continue to grow.
For example, the estimated percentage of Google’s archive for the first results page of any search that is “poor or misleading information” is only 3% for “cancer” and 11% for “asthma,” according to King.
