As 43 percent of Malaysia’s population is already literate and most of them can read and write English, there is plenty of room for development and growth for the Malaysian comic publishing industry. The new boom in quantity and quality of comic books and manga could turn the local industry into a major player in the Asian comic industry. However, authors and publishers have a lot of obstacles to face in order to survive in the new period of comic book publishing in Malaysia.
We have over 130 local comic titles in the market. Most of them are released by local publishing houses in their original language but English and Chinese versions are also produced. There are few English and a few Malay titles published overseas, and our publisher, Dreamerz Publishing Sdn Bhd, has been doing this for the past few years. But not as many as we wish. We want to bring back old gems and to find new ones, one of which is LAWAK KAMPUK: SPOT CHECK. Thus we reached out to Hasri and his team and hope to work together to bring Chinese readers another local creator’s work.
Every fifth person in Malaysia reads comic books. This estimate was derived from the graphic novel market between 2006 and 2012. But this number is just an estimate, as there are no reliable statistics for the comic book market. The number is mainly based on public interest, and the consumption has been rising rapidly. For example, the publishers of Malaysian comic magazines have also been booming in recent years.
We are still not in the Quran stage. While our artists are busy, they also continue to read the comic franchise and they also tend to be networking among themselves. Based on what we know, we have some classics from the past and some that have not been published till now.
Malaysian comic fans are unique in that they can read in English. There were some hesitant to read Vietnamese and Chinese comics from other countries for fear of reading something that was not to their taste, but it doesn’t seem to be a concern anymore.
