The commercialization of the Internet has resulted in growth of a new class of applications and services. One such application is voice communications over the Internet. Voice communications are now in active service over the public switched telephone network, both worldwide and long distance. Other applications currently in active service include video conferencing, Internet telephony, and a variety of voice-over-packet techniques. Many of these applications and services employ the Internet Protocol (IP) suite of protocols.
Typically, telephone calls are routed through a public switched telephone network in which an originating or a terminating node is assigned an IP address. As a result, the network is often referred to as an IP network. One IP-based voice protocol (VoIP) is Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). SIP provides basic features and functions for multimedia communications over the Internet, the PSTN, or other networks.
The Session Description Protocol (SDP) is used for VoIP. SDP is an application layer protocol for the session description mechanism of SIP. The Session Description Protocol offers a syntax for use in the SDP protocol, and specifies the structure and semantics of the SDP messages. Using the Session Description Protocol, endpoints can agree on their capabilities and media components by exchanging SDP offer and answer messages. The Session Description Protocol may be used to describe multimedia sessions for interactive communication such as video conferencing.
However, using the Session Description Protocol to establish a communication channel over the Internet, sometimes referred to as “Internet telephony”, can be problematic. The Session Description Protocol is a text-based protocol. Typically, in the Session Description Protocol, a client initiates a session by sending an SIP INVITE request to the server. In response to the INVITE request, the server may generate a SDP offer message containing information describing the session. The client can receive the SDP offer message from
