Once selected, that paste action will then apply to the entire selected or activated area, meaning the whole canvas will be changed to the effect of performing the action you’ve selected. Repeat it one more time to deselect the selection, change the effect in the menu to the opposite of what that action creates, and then select “Clear” for the action again. In this particular case one left-click on the canvas and that would be the end of it. (If you have any more actions to perform, you’ll have to repeat the steps.)
Select the paint bucket tool and pick some colors, but for now press and hold Command and drag selections for “Fill” in the new panel. (Alternatively, you can use the “Bring to Front” shortcut keys, or use the drop-down menu from the selection tool to pull the “Fill” action directly to the front of the toolbox.)
