Batman: Arkham Knight – Nintendo Wii U: a fantastic open-world Batman game. As with Arkham City, Arkham Knight’s combat relies heavily on the Arkham Asylum-style combat engine (which was the basis for City), which features fluid and precise combat that fits the context of the game. Unfortunately, though, Arkham Knight is another developer-offense game that rushed its release and relied on a downloadable game to make up for it, as well as add to the game’s longevity. The Wii U port is completely justified, but to cut a long story short, the Wii U port is an unacceptable emulator of the PC and next-gen consoles Arkham games in all aspects. The Wii U port also suffers from the same unplayable framerate as the Wii and Wii U versions of Arkham Asylum. It’s disappointing that Rocksteady didn’t give Wii U owners the game they wanted, but as with the Wii and Wii U, it’s better than being without the game at all.
Skullgirls: Ultimate Edition – Xbox 360: another retro port. While I do not have much to say about the additional content, the framerate is unacceptable. Getting above 40 FPS can be a chore. Additionally, a poor, poor controller mechanic has been implemented.
Killer Instinct: Season 2 – Xbox One: an excellent launch game on the Xbox One, which was a spectacularly bad port of the Wii version. It is like no other version. The controls are weirdly implemented and feel almost unsupported at times, and the game doesn’t look the same and has inferior graphics. Online play is half-assed, with the game locking and launching before it even starts.
King’s Field – Xbox One: a puzzle game that seems to exist only to display low-quality graphics. While it has a great concept (you control a small robot in a city-style environment), it becomes painfully apparent throughout that the developer had no idea what they were doing. Is it me, or did they just not bother to do any research on how to program a puzzle game?
