Q:

How to suppress std::bad_alloc in C++?

I’ve this simple loop:
while (true) {
std::vector &vec = *iter;
int i = 0;
int c = 0;
for (auto &e : vec) {
e = c;
c = e;
++i;
}
}

I have to omit memory exhaustion exceptions, and this code gives me a std::bad_alloc exception.
How can I properly suppress this exception?
EDIT: I guess the following code does not trigger any exception:
while (true) {
std::vector &vec = *iter;
int i = 0;
int c = 0;
for (auto &e : vec) {
e = c;
c = e;
++i;
}
}

I’m using c++11.

A:

When your code dies on a std::bad_alloc, it is actually due to out of memory. The details of that specific failure vary depending on the environment you are in, but it will always involve a call to malloc(0) or _mm_malloc/_mm_malloc/_mm_malloc/_mm_malloc etc.
There are a number of functions you can use to allocate memory in C++, but most of them are fairly unpleasant. A good choice is to use a new-style container.
Your code can be written as:
while (true) {
std::vector &vec = *iter;
int i = 0;
int c = 0;
for (auto &e : vec)
