If Aperture for iPad lacks some of the functionality of Aperture on the Mac, the same is not true for Photoshop Elements. However, if you want to do any screen capture, neither of these will work. In Elements 11, there are not only the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tools but also a Duplicate Image tool. The Duplicate Image tool is available in Elements 11 for Mac, but not the iPad. That’s the most disappointing omission. This tool, textured brush and all, is a staple tool for studio/art photographers. Without it, the Elements iPad app doesn’t work. As a bare-minimum, Mac-like version, Photoshop Elements 11’s highlighting tools are also well implemented. However, I did have a bug with the direct selection tool which caused some problems I couldn’t debug until I called a programmer friend.

Awesome! With object-oriented programming, the iPad can match and possibly surpass the usability of the full-functioning Mac version. This refreshing flexibility of the apps means there’s never a reason to feel restricted if you only have an iPad. For example, the iPad doesn’t support some features of Photo Mechanic 16.0, such as the ability to access Photo Mechanic’s library by dongle with an USB Reader (or any other device), or the ability to perform local disk image backup on the iPad. That’s just the way it works.

All of the products are useful and they certainly will help to increase the quality of your images. Some photographers are very happy with Lightroom 3 and I’d encourage you to keep using that program for all of your editing and printing needs. As you start to grow and learn about the industry, Photoshop is something that you can almost make do with as it will give you a great deal of the tools that you need. To that I say: keep it simple and don’t try to be a master at all of the Photoshop tools.

However, I did have a bug with the direct selection tool which caused some problems I couldn’t debug until I called a programmer friend.

Awesome! With object-oriented programming, the iPad can match and possibly surpass the usability of the full-functioning Mac version. This refreshing flexibility of the apps means there’s never a reason to feel restricted if you only have an iPad. For example, the iPad doesn’t support some features of Photo Mechanic 16.0, such as the ability to access Photo Mechanic’s library by dongle with an USB Reader (or any other device), or the ability to perform local disk image backup on the iPad. That’s just the way it works.

All of the products are useful and they certainly will help to increase the quality of your images. Some photographers are very happy with Lightroom 3 and I’d encourage you to keep using that program for all of your editing and printing needs. As you start to grow and learn about the industry, Photoshop is something that you can almost make do with as it will give you a great deal of the tools that you need. To that I say: keep it simple and don’t try to be a master at all of the Photoshop tools.
