You’ve probably heard that the Fine Art Editions are Adobe’s way of delivering, what they seem to believe, are the best available versions of the software. They represent several enhancements to the way Adobe’s premier desktop publishing product works and looks –– not just with the usual tweaks and options you’d expect any time an upgraded Photoshop receives a new “X” update. In fact, you may have thought they were the best versions of Photoshop ever released.

While this is certainly a bit of an exaggeration, Adobe’s Fine Art Editions have always offered some of the best workflows available from anyone who wants to design professionally. In fact, they’re still my go-to editors for Retouching and PSD editing. However, there’s a new edition in the works for the first time since 2012, and I’m very excited about it. Here’s my impressions of Photoshop (PS) 55 – the latest version of the classic desktop Photoshop toolbox.

The most obvious updates are the “plug-ins,” or the ways users can extend Photoshop with third-party tools that give them more specialized results than is possible with their standard features. There are plenty of these, and the ones bundled with the program are largely of value. But I’ve found the entire concept of “mini plug-ins” to be kind of a misnomer. Core plug-ins should be referred to as what they are– extensions to the program most Photoshop users will never need to install. The rest are mostly widget-like.¹

I’m pleased with the updates from recently, and I’m still quite happy with what I’ve been using. My needs for photo editing are fairly standard, and this version works well with those activities. I do need a pretty solid memory to keep my files organized, and the open file dialog still can be difficult to use when you need to import a large number of image files. For that reason, I tend not to use the Storyboard feature very often, except to show me areas of a scene that have large amounts of color- or contrast-altered photo editing. I prefer to work with separate files in Photoshop, but when I import my photos into Photoshop, I find the fastest way to work is to use the Create a Storyboard button to avoid dialog boxes.²
