(born 22 August 1969) is a Japanese jazz double-bassist.

Biography
Born in Ise, Mie Prefecture, Kobayashi first took lessons from Seiji Ozawa, and later from his father Makoto Kobayashi. He is a graduate of the Tokyo College of Music and the Tokyo College of Music & Arts, where he studied musicology.

His first professional experience was as a member of the double-bass group, Kobayashi’s Energy, which he formed with Daniel Ong. He has worked extensively with a range of other musicians as well.

He has performed as guest leader on over fifty albums, including many as a sideman, primarily with the Swingtet, whose bassist is Stanley Clark, and his accompanying Japanese singer and composer, Kiyoshi Hasegawa.

He has also led a number of ensembles. One, Ikka Jazz, played a critically acclaimed series of concerts on the theme of “The Birth of Jazz” at the Stansted Mountfitchet Festival, in 2006. His father, Makoto Kobayashi, had directed the music for the shows.

In 2017, for the centenary of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s birth, Kobayashi recorded a tribute album featuring some of Japan’s most active jazz musicians.

He has released three albums as leader.

He has twice won the ARIA award for Best Jazz Album, in 2010 for Five Pieces for Lovers and in 2014 for World Music.
