As much as I love all of the new features in Lightroom 6, I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed about the lack of a subscription service offered as part of the new Creative Cloud subscription. This is certainly something I will look into, though, when the full release of CS6 has hit the streets.

In case you skip this section, yes, Photoshop CS6 update 3 fixed the issue where you couldn’t access any of the (image) menus. If you access them repeatedly, you may have to force quit Photoshop. The problem was related to changes in Adobe Camera RAW to how it’s applied (indeed, why it had to be changed at all). Adobe claims several 5-10% speed improvements, though that may not really be the case. Lightroom 5 had a similar issue and it took me months to figure it out. I wonder if the CS6 update, which released more recently, has that fix.

Adobe has carried forward the previous “free” subscription model based on terms changing from year to year, with a low price for a yearly subscription. If you buy into the subscription model, you can access Photoshop, Lightroom, or both at no cost, as a Guest or at no cost, as a Creative Cloud member. There are some “price breaks” for certain special promotions or if you sign up for 36 months, but otherwise the cost is almost the same. If you don’t want to take advantage of the special promotions, you can sign up for a one-time access to use Photoshop Elements alone for example at a cost of $49. After the first time you sign up, Adobe doesn’t offer the same price until you cancel or upgrade your product. I have no intention of switching to a subscription model. Also, I don’t like the fact that Adobe forces me to purchase only on the App Store each time I want to install a new update. It’s a nuisance.

Illustrator’s powerful features are concentrated in a few frequently-accessed toolbars at the bottom of the screen, between a handful of panels. Descriptions for each new panel are always in the menu, and they can be toggled on and off individually. New panels are easy to activate so you can get to frequently-used items quickly. Panel titles that need to be accessed frequently can be customized or toggled on and off. There are three menu bar choices for switching between the layers, tools, and panels. As for Adobe Photoshop editing skill levels, there are 4 different levels available based on your experience and budget. All levels have their advantages and disadvantages. If it’s a new program that you want to try out for the first time, the Starter or Premium levels are wise choices. The most powerful and expensive version, the Creative Suite, is best reserved for experienced Photoshop users who don’t mind paying for additional features. If your budget doesn’t stretch to the expensive version of Photoshop, it’s still a reasonable option to buy a basic or advanced version, depending on your needs. You can also try different levels of Photoshop for free, so trial and error can help you determine which one is best for you.

Adobe Sensei AI will introduce the new capabilities to web browsing from Adobe Edge, the company’s next-generation browser. Web content and editing tools will work in harmony with the desktop application, further empowering image creators to achieve creative results.

Adobe Photoshop is a feature-packed software for editing imagery and graphics with the most powerful tools for cutting, pasting, reducing, enlarging, transforming, color correcting, and editing your files, your photographs and your artwork. In addition to the selection enhancements mentioned above, the new Browser feature adds features that make it easier to drag and drop files into Photoshop from Preview or other images in the browser; the Trash can now show dynamic lift/drop indicator for drag actions; the Path Selection tool now encompasses the entire path, making it easier to drag individual components of a path; and, the newly integrated SmartPoints tool makes it easier to sketch based on an image’s shape.

The new features are available in the beta release starting today on the beta.photoshop.com website. Users of previous versions of Photoshop CC can download the new version available on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

The 20.4 update was a great improvement to the overall workflow experience in Photoshop, with file saving, the new web browser, and the new smart guides features, but the biggest missing piece was the option to edit a file in the cloud. While we’re still waiting on that release, we are confident that they will provide a better experience with their cloud based editing.

Typekit

In June 2020, they released a new typeface called Tribes. Normally, we would think that this would be built into Photoshop. But, not only did it not get incorporated, but they replaced their font with a custom font from the Google’s Creative Cloud Typekit service. While we appreciate the creative direction of the typeface, combining it with the creative service has meant that if we ever need to replace the font, we have to find it in the Typekit API and install it manually. Instead of making six clicks to install a dot type font, it’s now a seven clicks. While they may have been anticipating millions of users switching over to a limited font choice, it still takes longer than it should to make a change. If Photoshop implemented Typekit, we would be able to just replace the font on our own and not have to deal with this.

When it comes to organization, Photoshop’s Libraries option gives you powerful tools for building and managing your art collection. Automatic Content-Aware Move (Auto-CAM) lets you do that, and it’s pretty clever in its use of the content at hand. In most cases, the program doesn’t actually move the picture. Instead, it identifies the area around a moveable object that will keep the object’s shape and is the best match for that area. You can move and combine objects, and then resynthesize the picture. It sounds magical, so it is. The technology also is smart enough to cope with edges between objects. That’s a big deal when you’re working with a horizon line, for instance. Auto-CAM makes it easy to make any object float above a landscape. Some of you may be tempted to do away with the background photo altogether.

And there’s a new release of the Photoshop application itself, with new features and improvements. With Long Hair, there’s a new hair and skin options panel, plus a new brush functionality that allows you to change the shape and style of hair.

Other features include a Fix Aspect Ratio repair tool, which works by cloning out areas that aren’t perfectly square or rectangular. Shapes Match Eyedroppers work almost like magic, multiplying the precision of manual selections. And a new Airbrush tool for painting on top of images and even UV Mapping. Plus there’s new settings for fine-tuning your image in the Adjust menu.

Then there are the new products, such as professional-grade desktop video editing. This is the first video editing software from Adobe that gives you a complete suite of tools, including an intuitive timeline, powerful video editing features and powerful audio tools—all powered by AI. When you integrate Adobe Sensei into any of the high-performance video editing features in Photoshop, you can use AI to bring personality, timing and emotion to your projects.

The Color Balance tool can be accessed from the Adjustments panel with the Color/Curves tool by pressing Ctrl+ Alt+ C. More fine tuning options and presets have also been added, which help users adjust the image easily. You can also apply the Restore Default setting in the Adjustments panel for each adjustment in your images.

Animations can be created using the Adjustment Layers with more motion effects. In Photoshop CS6, users can also use the Rotate feature in the Actions panel to create a variety of static effects. Also, with the new feature in Photoshop CS6, users can now create a composite of the entire image with the use of the new Adjustment Layers and the same user interface.

The Brush panel now has Edit In tools, like the Eraser and Clone Stamp, to help you quickly clean up your work and simplify your workflow. Also, the Brush panel now has the new Fill Pattern Soap Bubble pattern that you can use to create seamless Mosaics. You can apply any of the patterns with the ability to colorize the bubbles in the background.

In Photoshop CS6, you can easily create and manipulate vector graphics using smart manipulation tools and study the results in the Quick Mask panel to quickly see your image’s graphics in its entirety. You can use the Freeform tools to transform, edit and isolate edges with the Freeform tools by extruding, thickening, reducing or repositioning.

In the 2010s, Adobe released Photoshop Elements 11 in November 2015. It was the first version of Photoshop for Mac and Linux, both of which were separated into a separate publishing division. In 2016, elements for Windows was launched. In January 2017, Adobe announced it was bringing Elements to the web. In December 2017, Adobe acquired the company 19 Bullets, which is a distraction-free website editor for people who edit photos and other types of media on a regular basis. The Elements version uses the newer, Web-safe rendering engine. In October 2017, these editions of Elements were also ported. In June 2018, the new Elements for iOS was launched.
